A rising number of people are looking to transform their garages into functional living spaces, according to garage conversion firm Pro Assist Property Services.

The firm suggested people are opting for conversions instead moving due to the cost and inconvenience of the latter.

Asa Herbert of Pro Assist Property Services, said: “Most people don’t even use their garages for parking anymore.

“Now, that space is being turned into something useful, a home office, a gym, or an extra bedroom.”

Garage conversions start from £10,000 and can often be completed in two weeks – while they offer the biggest uplift to a property’s value in areas where parking isn’t in high demand.

However, since they generally aren’t designed for living, they tend to have poor insulation or ventilation, which can lead to problems with cold and damp.

Herbert added: “A proper survey and professional contractor make all the difference.”
